Scherzo is a professional development platform for young singers who have recently completed their training. Scherzo offers a programme of performance and training projects as well as classes in business to a cohort of singers selected annually at audition. Our season runs from June to October and includes singing principal roles in opera and oratorio, and giving recitals of solo and ensemble music. Alongside performance opportunities, Scherzo offers coaching and workshops with industry leaders, and classes from experts in programming, marketing, and fundraising. Our programme helps emerging artists develop a diverse range of professional skills and seeks to instill artistic and managerial confidence when setting out to build their careers independently. We believe this focus is necessary to maintain a vibrant cultural sector in times of change.
Our activities include:
- bringing singers together to work collaboratively on suitable repertoire, developing ensemble skills and rehearsal communication techniques.
- offering opportunities to develop the necessary aural skills to perform with orchestras and conductors, often a barrier to excelling in early career breaks.
- guiding singers in researching new material, vital to a freelancer’s employability and a contribution to the broadening of the Canon.
- offering basic training in business management: budgets, marketing, fundraising, establishing an ensemble etc.
We manage Longhope Opera, a fledgling country house opera festival in East Hampshire. Each July we produce a comic bel canto opera with a company of emerging talent. All cast, creatives, crew, management & orchestra are under 30 years old. We are also known for our oratorio concerts which tour London & South East. These are collaborations with other professional development organisations and represent a fresh take on the works, often with an inter-disciplinary element.
